GST Rates in India
A quick guide to the GST rate slabs used in India, and how to check the exact rate for a specific product or service.
GST rates may change based on government notifications. Verify the applicable rate for your product or service from official sources such as the GST portal before making tax decisions. Do not treat this page as an exhaustive or current classification list.
The Four Main GST Slabs
| Slab | General description |
|---|---|
| 0% | Exempt or nil-rated goods and services, such as certain unbranded food staples and essential services |
| 5% | Basic household necessities and select essential items |
| 12% | Standard processed goods and select services |
| 18% | The default rate applied to most goods and services in India |
| 28% | Luxury items, sin goods, and select high-value products |
Some categories also have special rates (such as 0.25% or 3% on certain precious items) and a compensation cess may apply on top of GST for a small number of goods.
How to Check the Correct Rate
- Search the HSN code (for goods) or SAC code (for services) on the official GST rate finder.
- Check the tax invoice from your supplier, which should state the GST rate applied.
- Consult a tax professional for classification-sensitive or high-value transactions.
